@matt__sykes__ – Regenerative Swimming Cultures

From Japanese onsen to Danish harbour baths and floating filtering pools in New York, Matt has travelled the world studying bathing cultures. In 2019, supported by the Victorian Tourism Industry Council and Peninsula Hot Springs, he proposed a vision for a 900km Great Victorian Bathing Trail (GVBT) which will stretch across our state’s southern coastline. You guessed it … Yarra Pools is one of the iconic experiences marked along the GVBT. Through his consultancy @regen.projects, Matt continues to work towards a swimmable Birrarung / Yarra River by 2030. This includes collaborations with the Yarra Riverkeeper Association and Swinburne University. Matt is also involved with World Bathing Day, a global celebration of water and bathing traditions which takes place on June 22.

🎙NEWS FROM YARRA POOLS🎙 Following the City 🎙NEWS FROM YARRA POOLS🎙

Following the City of Melbourne’s formal assessment of our proposal for a Yarra Pool, Council has decided that project is not currently feasible to deliver within the scope of the Greenline project. We are deeply disappointed by this decision.

The work of Yarra Pools is, and always has been, in the spirit of civic generosity, and a recognition of the need for urgency in addressing the health of the Yarra Birrarung in the face of a growing population and a climate crisis.

Our pool proposal was the result of thousands of hours of pro bono work by a dedicated team of experts, supported by partners such as @melbournewater, @arupgroup, @earthcheck, and the visionary work of @wowowaarch. I would like to acknowledge the work of the many individuals and organisations involved in developing this proposal, as well as the enormous support of our stakeholders and the broader community.

We are encouraged by Council’s conclusion that there may be future opportunities to consider a swimming pool in the city’s waterways in an alternative location, and we remain open to other opportunities.

Our team is now taking time to consider what this means for our campaign, and to refocus on our ultimate goal - to achieve a swimmable Yarra Birrarung.

While we are disappointed that a pool is not recommended to be included in the Greenline project, we commend Council for this important investment in the renewal of the north bank of the Yarra Birrarung.
